In the state of Connecticut if you do not want to pay insurance on a vehicle that is being stored or inoperable you need to turn in your plates to the Department of Motor Vehicle and request that they be put on “hold”. During that time, you may cancel insurance coverage on the car. When you are going to once again operate the vehicle in New Haven CT you would need to inform the CT DMV and get insurance on the vehicle.
You may check with your Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles to find out what state laws permit for in your situation. Do not take off insurance without verifying with the DMV and likely turning in your registration and plates. If you do take off insurance without turning in your registration and plates then many states will cite you and penalize you for a lapse in car insurance.
